As trainers and assessors of pilots we experienced that separate regimes for assessment of technical, professional skills and non-technical, human factors skills, - made little sense. It is the complex interaction of all skills that gives the potential for a successful outcome. We also knew that a valid and useful assessment of performance had to address the context the performance is appearing in. A good solution to a challenge in one context can be very different from how the same challenge needs to be handled in a different context. Finally; there is no way to achieve valid assessments if the observer has to spend too much time and effort on using the assessment tool instead of making observations.
With these pillars we started the development of the Integrated Assessment Program (IAP) and founded Hucon Global AS. The choice of using generic variables for the assessment of performance allowed us to overcome several methodological and practical obstacles. It also permitted to emphasize the relevance of expert skills held by trainers and assessors observing in different contexts.
Thanks to highly competent software engineers and a close cooperation with the training management and instructors in the offshore helicopter company Bristow Norway, the IAP-tool developed into the user-friendly, instructor oriented tool we now offer.
The approach based on integration of assessment of technical and non-technical skills has been welcomed not only by the aviation industry, but also in training of medical teams, marine officers and military personnel. Working to increase the training quality for teams we all have to rely on, while also excel the return on investments for governmental and commercial training institutions, make us look forward to an exciting future together with our partners and customers ready for innovation and improvements.
